Our research and development client specialises in electric motors, controllers, and inverters for vehicles and equipment. They are looking to recruit a Senior Test Engineers on a perm and contract basis to join their Engineering team.

Purpose

The Senior Test Engineer is an integral member of the Test and Simulation team, responsible for delivering testing systems for verifying and validation tasks. The Senior Test Engineer is responsible for dynamometer verification testing of electrical drive systems under the direction of the Lead Test and Simulation Engineer. They will focus on the testing and verification of electric motor components, including test rig and fixture design changes, NI code verification and all relevant tasks associated with operation of the dyno machine. The Senior Test Engineer will support the Lead Test and Simulation Engineer VP Engineering and Chief Technical Officer.

Duties

• Ownership, definition of and management of Dyno test facilities and test schedules.

• Manage and plan tests, tear down, verification, validation and competitor benchmarking activities. Contribute to overarching project plans to ensure adherence to schedules are maintained and compliant with company processes.

• Manage and commission test jigs and fixtures required to complete test plans.

• Effectively identify and communicate issues to upper management in a clear, concise and timely manner while driving action based on urgency.

• Maintain a safe, clean, and orderly environment reflective of HSE principles.

• Design Test system architecture required to meet and work in accordance with verification and validation tasks detailed within Verification and Validation Plans

• Implement NI LabVIEW code to perform verification and validation tests on electric drive systems in accordance with relevant engineering standards (BSI-60034-1)

• Produce technical reports that evaluate and compare product performance and statistical data for internal and external use.

• Process and evaluate data that is collected from testing to determine the validity in the data and that tests being performed are true and correct.

• Perform tests in accordance with test plans and ensure data storage complies with company procedures.

• Supervise, train and instruct test engineers in all aspects of testing

• Manage and mentor test engineers to perform tests, verification and validation tasks, commission jigs and operate test equipment.

• Perform root cause analysis on test failures, test fixtures, test equipment and issues that may occur during installation and commissioning of test systems.

• Act as a technical resource to other departments to address and resolve test issues.

• Provide advice and recommendations for improving the efficiency, accuracy and automation of current testing methods.

• Maintain test procedures and ensure test equipment is in good working order and in calibration according to departmental procedures.

• Support the mechanical, electronics, Integration and firmware teams in verification and validation tasks required including pre-compliance testing.

• Support product design teams through test development, data analysis, competitor benchmarking, verification and validation activities. Provide feedback to engineering about testing requirements.

Qualifications

• BEng/BSc in a relevant Electronics/Embedded/Electro-Mechanical engineering qualification

Experience

• Experience in an engineering development environment, preferably sectors where testing of electro-mechanical machines is prominent (such as Automotive)

• Proven experience in writing technical reports in accordance with verification and validation procedures.

• Excellent understanding of basic electronics principles including measurement principles (isolated vs differential measurement methodology, bridge, 4-wire)

• Knowledge of signal Measurement best practices. (i.e., when to use coax over twisted pair, grounding strategy, guarding & shielding techniques (electric, magnetic & conductive etc)

• Ability to calculate measurement error and understanding noise floor (intrinsic noise, thermal noise, flicker noise, shot noise, SNR)

• Knowledge of data acquisition (sensor/transducer, signal conditioning, signal processing. A too D, data logging/transmission)

• Familiarity with PXI Data Acquisition chassis, specifically NI PXIe chassis & cards.

• Good understanding of Visual programming, NI LabVIEW, critically understanding measurement synchronisation (simultaneous sampling), data processing, multi-threaded processes. Benefit understanding of additional languages and use of API/sdks (e.g., c++, c#)

• Experience using Mathematical processing software, i.e., MATLAB for data analysis, processing, and presentation of results.

• Understanding of Nyquist, sampling rate, bandwidth, anti-aliasing, phase shift & frequency response

• Experience in DSP, fast-Fourier, S-domain
