Careers at Sonardyne.

Sonardyne has been writing the future of underwater technology for over 50 years. As a leading provider of underwater navigation, positioning, communication, imaging and monitoring technology, its innovations help transform what’s possible in offshore energy, maritime defence and ocean science. Sonardyne technology has enabled people to install wind farms, control squadrons of underwater drones and detect tsunami waves hundreds of miles offshore.

About Sonardyne

Sonardyne is a classic British success story. Founded in 1971, it has received the Queen’s award for innovation and export several times and has excellent staff retention rates thanks to a positive work environment, attractive benefits package and interesting and challenging careers for bright minds. It offers boundless opportunities as befits a company that is a leading light in technological design and manufacture. It has an open and innovative culture where every member of the team has the chance to shape the future as well as get hands-on experience of the application of the company’s innovative solutions in the ocean environment. The team also likes to have some fun, with a very active social committee regularly providing a variety of subsidised events.

Sonardyne’s global headquarters is located in Blackbushe Hampshire, 40 miles South-West of London, with regional offices in Aberdeen, Plymouth, Houston, Singapore and Brazil. The company is part of the Covelya Group, a family of companies which operates in a wide range of water and maritime sectors.

What kind of people does Sonardyne recruit?

For technical roles Sonardyne normally hires engineers with A-Levels (or an interest in) maths and physics and degrees in Electronic Engineering, or Engineering degrees that include a variety of disciplines including Electronics, Software Engineering, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering. Candidates with skills in embedded software, wireless communications, autonomous robotics, digital processing, underwater acoustics, general electronics, command and control software, mechanical design and full stack development are particularly relevant.

As an engineering and technology leader Sonardyne suits engineers who enjoy complex technological challenges. A sizeable proportion of its technology team are Research and Development specialists who design both innovative new products and new applications for existing ones. Sonardyne products must function perfectly in physically harsh environments; as such, reliability is a critical requirement of every Sonardyne solution or application and candidates need to demonstrate their ability to focus on quality.

Sonardyne provides ample opportunity for employees to develop and grow with the company. Some of its engineers have transitioned into Business Development and there are opportunities to move between projects, or for hands-on engineers to become project managers. Many roles also provide the opportunity for substantial travel as the business has customer sites on vessels, in marinas and offshore across the world, as well as its own trial facility in Plymouth.

Sonardyne is increasingly focusing its operations within the growing renewable energy marketplace, further opening up career opportunities for future generations of engineers and in some cases ocean science specialists.
