Senior / Principal Manufacturing Engineer - BIW
Perm or Contract
Circa £35 - £40 Ltd per hour

For this role we require a Senior / Principal Manufacturing Engineer with a strong Automotive BIW / Body manufacturing background. Experience in feasibility / DFM / pilot prototype build and working from concept ideas and taking this through to manufacture.
This is an exciting new role where you can be a part of a brand new automotive project.
Responsibilities:
• Manufacturing DFx work with design teams:
o Use DFA/DFM and Lean Manufacturing techniques to ensure suitability of all designs for efficient manufacture
o Attend technical reviews / design meetings and present feedback where required
o Lead virtual builds, to develop an assembly process and understand risks
o Support physical builds in a Pilot Build environment
o Manage technical issues and escalate where appropriate
o Project management, through development and monitoring of timing plans
• Manufacturing technology development:
o Assess the manufacturing requirements associated with a product, compare this to existing capability and map necessary areas for technology development
o Work with other engineers, external suppliers and Universities to resolve these capability gaps through manufacturing technology development
• Manufacturing documentation:
o Generation of manufacturing documentation for new products / technologies, such as process and material flows, prototype build videos, production layouts and time studies, equipment lists and costings, PFMEAs, etc.
o Contribute towards the development and submission of departmental responses to key individuals such as Directors, programme managers and design managers
• Specification, purchase and implementation of Manufacturing Systems and equipment
o Create RFQ specifications for key manufacturing equipment
o Raise capital requests in a timely manner to support product launch plans
o Proof of Principle – where required develop proof of principle manufacturing rigs either internally or with external suppliers to understand manufacturing risk
o Assess the process capability of key processes and equipment, using SPC, GR&R or Measurement System Analysis as appropriate
o Project manage and oversee implementation of equipment (from complex machines to jigs and fixtures) using both internal and external (supplier) resource
o Investigate and implement new component manufacturing solutions
o Assist in the identification and selection of new manufacturing equipment suppliers
Skills & experience required:
• Manufacturing skills and experience:
o Ability to demonstrate a sound understanding of general engineering principles
o Experience of a range of manufacturing techniques and an ability to explain them and apply them in novel and imaginative ways
o Experience of implementing manufacturing solutions in a NPI/NPD environment, preferably at assembly level in addition to component level
o Ability to drive progress and actions through an analytical and data driven approach
• Project and People management skills and experience:
o Project management experience, leading and delivering technology projects into production with flawless launch, meeting productivity & quality targets
o Ability to influence decision makers (both technical and non-technical) in a challenging environment
• General skills and requirements:
o Degree level education in an Engineering discipline
o Extensive experience in relevant engineering roles
o Self-motivated with the ability to lead, guide and influence others not in their direct line of responsibility
o Experience of working in an environment where specification and process are not always predetermined
o Excellent English oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively at all levels within the business
Desirable Skills & Experience:
• Manufacturing skills and experience:
o Green or Black belt accreditation in Lean Six-Sigma
o Manufacturing simulation
o Delivered continuous improvement in a manufacturing environment
o Manufacturing process research and development
o Manufacturing equipment design, build and implementation
• Project and People management skills and experience:
o Held a position of responsibility (project / people / financial) within the manufacturing function of a lean, quality driven, class leading organization
o Ability to evaluate, understand and manage risk (technical, safety, commercial) associated with a project
o Project management: APM or PMI certifications
• General skills and experience:
o Product design and development
o Commercial exposure, especially supplier management
o Hands-on engineering experience and hobbies
Experience and background:
• 10 years+ engineering experience post-graduation
• Automotive background
• Ideally with understanding of different scales of manufacturing from low to high volume
• Ideally have worked in an environment close to the design team, and are used to interacting with both designers and external suppliers to deliver manufacturing solutions, rather than simply overseeing a process
