Senior Power Electronics Engineer - Motor Drive
Our innovative technology client is seeking a Senior Power Electronics Engineer - Motor Drive to join their research team to be a part of concept development of new products within the business.
The successful applicant for this role will be part of the team designing the next generation of power electronic systems for our products. The power electronics team in Technical Research is responsible for a number of disciplines, including:
Motor inverter hardware for motor systems that can operate in excess of 100,000rpm
Power supply design - DC-DC and AC-DC designs
Battery management systems - design of Lithium-Ion battery management systems for a variety of products and cell pack structures, as well as development of new battery management system for emerging cell technologies
Heater control systems and protection
The Senior Power Electronics – Motor Drives role will involve:
The design of motor inverters and control for brushed and brushless DC, servo and stepper motors
Working with different product teams to gain an in-depth product understanding, while using knowledge of the latest technologies to create innovative power electronics systems and solutions
Ensuring designs can comply with relevant EMC/EMI standards and modifying design where needed to ensure this is the case
Thermal management design of power electronics systems
Design of both mains and battery powered electronics to meet global compliance standards and safety requirements
Use of electronic simulation tools to gain detailed understanding of circuit behavior
Creating electronics schematics and PCB layouts that meet product requirements and provide functional product prototypes
Strong lab skills to build and test prototypes with minimal supervision
As a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, the successful applicant will be expected to:
Develop a power system concept, prove key technologies and demonstrate the system feasibility
Produce clear, well written documentation prior to handover to the development teams
Demonstrate designs are safe, robust, cost effective and fit for purpose for a high volume manufacture environment, through detailed laboratory testing, simulation and analysis.
Education and experience:
Minimum BEng/MEng degree in Electrical & Electronic Engineering or other relevant discipline
Minimum technical knowledge:
Experience in motor inverter design and motor control, particularly brushless DC motors, servo or stepper motors
General knowledge of power electronic devices, including silicon based IGBTs and MOSFETs and wide bandgap technologies
Understanding of device characteristics and issues with switching behaviour in real circuits as well as power switch driver design
Device selection - Interpretation of datasheets and knowledge of design methods to confidently select the lowest cost devices while achieving reliability targets
Knowledge and experience of using power hybrid modules and power SoC modules (e.g. drivers and power switches in one device
Schematic capture using Altium Designer, Mentor Graphics or other main stream tools
Use of SPICE based simulation tools such as Simetrix and LTspice
Design calculation tools such as Mathcad, Matlab, Excel.
Circuit simulation and design tolerance analysis
Good quality engineering process understanding and appreciation
PCB layout – size/cost minimisation while achieving layouts for inherently good EMC compliance and thermal design.

Additional experience that is desirable:
Experience with Flowtherm or similar thermal modelling packages
Robust design including FMEA techniques Experience of analogue circuit design (e.g. signal amplification and conditioning for feedback signals from power electronic hardware to microcontrollers for example).
Experience of programming microcontrollers, such as Cortex M devices
