Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
Permanent - Salary £40,000 - £45,000
Southampton, Hampshire
Job Purpose:
In this role you will own the mechanical design and development of next generation fibre laser products, through the full product development lifecycle, ensuring the requirements of all stakeholders are met, including other product development functions, product marketing and introduction into manufacturing. This is a key role in the Product Development team with interaction across many functions within the company, and with significant influence on the successful launch of new products to market.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
• Design and development of mechanical and opto-mechanical components, assemblies and laser systems using SolidWorks 3D modelling software. This will include all aspects of mechanical system design, including the integration of optical, thermal and electronic/ electrical system requirements, from design through to manufacture
• Detailed design drawings and procurement specifications
• Finite element modelling of thermal performance and fluid dynamics
• Liaison with suppliers to support product design, specifications and product compliance
• Documentation for transferring new products/processes from Development to Manufacturing
• Work within multidisciplinary NPI teams and Production to deliver new products as defined by the strategic plan
• Work across multiple tasks methodically and efficiently and meet committed timescales
Required Experience:
Ideally the successful candidate will have demonstrable experience in a product development environment in either the high-power laser field or within a related industry, for example aerospace, industrial laser systems or analytical instrumentation.
Candidates must demonstrate:
• Experience with a 3D CAD software package ideally Solidworks or CREO and MS Office
• Experience in design for assembly, manufacture, service and reliability
• Experience in appropriate material choices and design tolerances for sheet metal and machined parts
• Experience in design for thermal management via the use of heatsinks
• Experience of working with external suppliers
Candidates will ideally also demonstrate:
• Experience in electro-mechanical design including integration of PCBs, connectors and cabling
• Previous experience with fibre optics or lasers would be highly beneficial but is not essential
• Experience of small scale project management would be desirable
• Previous experience of DDM Database Management would be beneficial but is not essential
Qualifications:
• 2:2 Degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering discipline, Bachelors or Masters
• Alternatively, qualified via a suitable Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship
