Lead Engine Design Engineer

This is a chance to shape the next generation of powertrain technology for a world-renowned high-performance automotive brand, working closely with Exec-level stakeholders and cross-functional teams while leading an engineering group through full technical product delivery.
The role covers detailed ICE design leadership, vehicle integration and packaging input, supplier relationship management, and indirect team leadership with a strong degree of autonomy and full support to grow within the business. Based in Surrey, with hybrid working available.
What You'll Own
- Technical ownership of high-performance ICE components and sub-systems, down to detailed design level
- Defining engine systems requirements in coordination with Product, Finance, Suppliers and Exec stakeholders owning attribute, cost and timing compliance
- Reviewing and signing off Technical Product Specifications (drawings, tech specs, DFMA), ensuring compliance with BS 8888 and ISO GPS standards
- Directing internal and external design/analysis teams against programme timing
- Managing component and sub-system BOMs, specs, FMEAs and DVPs, alongside cost, timing and quality targets working closely with Purchasing and SQD
- Assessing and applying appropriate Powertrain and Driveline technology
- Mentoring engineers and senior engineers reviewing their work, challenging approach and decisions, and pushing for better outcomes rather than direct line management
- Supporting vehicle programme attribute owners on development and reporting
- Ensuring seamless interfacing with structural, packaging, aerodynamic and cooling systems
- Controlling design release against project timing
- Directing component testing execution and results evaluation, supporting development through to manufacture and launch
- Preparing and presenting materials for internal/external programme reviews
Background We're Looking For
- Strong track record in high-performance automotive OEM or motorsport engine design
- OEM or Tier 1 component delivery experience
- Design experience within an APQP-style framework (FMEA, component planning, PPAP)
- Solid CAE knowledge across combustion systems, structural and dynamic components
- CATIA V5 2D/3D preferred, with strong BS 8888 / ISO GPS tolerancing experience
- Comfortable with standard MS Office tools
Qualifications
- Mechanical or Automotive Engineering degree, 2:1 or above
- Experience or qualifications demonstrating team leadership capability
