David Watts

To quote Dave, “if you give me a job, I take it to bed with me!” And that’s Dave in a nutshell - sense of humour never far away, and one of the most committed professionals we know. He won’t rest until he’s completed an assignment to the highest possible standard, and he adds value in the process, whether by providing sound advice based on his considerable expertise, or following up with fantastic post-placement support that allows clients and candidates to rest easy.

Background

David’s career in technical recruitment started when he spent five years at a specialist electronics and software recruitment firm. He later joined engineering recruitment firm ARM while it was still in relative infancy, spending twelve years there before joining Gerrell & Hard in 2013.

Role at Gerrell & Hard

Dave fulfils assignments in marine, electronics, manufacturing, high-end audio and more, sourcing the best talent for the design and manufacture of almost any technology and sector.

Free time

In his free time Dave enjoys many things in moderation, from golf to music and hi-fi, most sports and family. He dabbles with piano and guitar and loves listening to music. We can also testify that he used to be very handy in midfield with a real turn of pace, but now prefers the angles of the G&H pool table.

Dave, what do you most enjoy about your job?

“I love learning and am always keen to understand the new skills and technologies within my remit. I’m also fascinated by people’s motivations; I’ve tracked the changing wants and needs of thousands of engineers over the course of their careers so I think I’ve developed an understanding of the needs that unite people whilst also appreciating what makes each candidate unique. I get a kick out of developing this understanding, and using it to help people clarify their thinking if they are struggling.”

What are you most proud of about your job?

“It’s the feeling of knowing that I’ve got a perfect role for a candidate and a perfect candidate for a client, and having the trust with each that means they’ll have confidence in my judgement. I never push anyone, because I know them well enough to understand whether something’s right for them or not – that applies to both sets of customers. The fact that I’ve got to that point with people is something I’m proud of.”

Tell us something your customers might not know about you...

“Back when I was starting in recruitment this was almost a bit of a dirty secret, but I never had any ambitions to lead or manage. I just love doing what I do to the best of my ability. I really enjoy being in an environment where you can simply do a really good job. There’s a real need for this today in organisations generally, in all sectors.”
