Our high technology client in Southampton is seeking a Fibre Technologist with experience of fibre fabrication and process development. This role would suit someone with Chelate, optical manufacturing experience, developing new fabrication technologies in a phonics environment.
Job Purpose:
The Fibre Technologist is required to take a leading role in developing cutting edge specialty fibre fabrication processes and realizing new and innovative fibre designs in the context of a high end, high volume fibre laser manufacturing environment. Working closely with Laser R&D, Fibre Technology and Manufacturing teams the Fibre Technologist is expected to grow key technical competencies within wider group to facilitate the deployment of novel fibre laser platforms in a global market.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Duties & Responsibilities:
Development of novel fabrication methods for optical fibres and optical fibre assemblies to enhance fibre laser performance, expand the capabilities of the fibre laser product range and increase the competitiveness of the fibre manufacturing operation at the Hedge End site
Development and implementation of new and innovative specialty fibre product designs
Identification and evaluation of new and emerging technologies for use in specialty fibre fabrication and characterization
Participation in, and contribution to, fibre laser technology and NPI projects as fibre technology representative
Liaison with 3rd party academic and industrial organisations in collaborative initiatives as required
Development and documentation of improved fibre processes and product characterisation methods
Monitoring and controlling manufacturing preform fabrication and fibre draw processes
Provision of training to manufacturing and engineering staff
Improvement of fibre manufacturing yield, product capability and reduction in cost
Reporting and communicating key projects to all levels within the organization including senior management
Assisting Process Engineers with troubleshooting fibre fabrication issues as required
Required Experience:
Experience of developing new fabrication technologies in a photonics environment
Practical experience of developing optical fibre preform manufacturing processes using the MCVD method
Strong track record of applying physical principles and fundamental science to product development
Sound understanding in the use of data analysis and statistics to design experiments and solve technical problems
Strong I.T. and presentation skills
Experience in using Chelate deposition in optical fibre preform development and manufacture
Experience of optical fibre development in an industrial/commercial environment
Qualified /experienced in advanced manufacturing tools and techniques eg 6 Sigma, TPM etc
3+ years’ experience in technology development
Degree or equivalent qualification; Materials Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or closely related discipline
