Fibre Process Engineer
Permanent - Salary - Circa 28k
Southampton, Hampshire
Job Purpose:
The role is to support the development of optical fibre manufacturing processes through all phases of the product lifecycle from concept through to manufacture and requires a strongly practical, hands-on approach to process development and control, that is underpinned with an understanding of the principles of materials related to glass and polymers.
Some knowledge of advanced manufacturing machinery would be beneficial.
In order of preference the role would suit someone with the below experience:
• Machine Control aspects
• Manufacturing experience
• Materials or Glass experience
This would suit someone with circa 2 years hands-on experience or even perhaps someone who has had a summer placement for a placement year and looking for their first full time role. Training can then be provided so as long as you have one of the bove and a willingness to learn this could be a role for you.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
• Leading technology development for next generation products
• Commissioning of new fibre manufacturing equipment
• Monitoring and controlling/tuning manufacturing processes through control charts and trending of production performance
• Supporting Production to ensure operating procedures are efficient and fit for purpose
• Development new fibre and preform manufacturing processes
• Improvement in yield through identification and reduction of waste and stabilisation of production processes
• Ensuring instruments and measurement equipment remain within calibration limits
• Improvement of manufacturing yield, product capability and reduction in cost
• Working closely with Fibre Manufacturing team to transfer processes to Production
Required Experience:
• The successful candidate will have knowledge of glass and polymer material properties gained within a related industry or a university
• Knowledge of automated control and development of improved processes
Candidates should also be able to demonstrate:
• Industrial experience of high technology processes incorporating yield improvement and cost reduction
• Knowledge process of instrumentation and calibration methods
• Project management of technical projects
Qualifications:
• BSc degree (or equivalent) qualified in Materials Science, Engineering or closely related discipline
• Prefer at least 2 years hands-on experience of working with automated manufacturing machinery, lasers, or manufacture of optical fibre
