Our composite manufacturing client based in Cambridgeshire is seeking multiple composite tooling design engineers.
This would suit someone from an aerospace / automotive tooling design background designing patterns, moulds, tooling, fixtures to work within a team of 15 people taking the design from concept, through manufacturing to the end client. Therefore, you need to be a multi-skilled engineer whom enjoys varied component design rather than specialising in just one area. Working as part of a small team, liaising with customers within aerospace mainly but also, automotive, seeing a project from start to finish.
 
Job Purpose:
To lead and support the design and manufacturing of tooling across multiple projects, from patterns and moulds through to machining and bonding fixtures.  To ensure delivery is to specification, within time, cost and quality constraints.
 
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Engineering
o Design tooling using 3D Computer Aided Design tools (Ideally Catia)
o Ensure strategies meet performance and quality requirements, and statutory regulations 
o Carry out engineering checks and reviews to ensure functionality of designs
o Produce detailed manufacturing documents and additional instructions as appropriate
o Specify proprietary components
o Compile and control Bills of Materials
 
Project
o Participate in projects from estimating to part manufacture
o Ensure customer scope and requirements are documented, and change managed
o Establish project plan and manage technical delivery
o Liaise with customer representatives to enable efficient transfer of data, and to ensure designs meet the customer’s expectations
o Communicate with suppliers and compile specifications, to ensure subsequent manufacture is in accordance with design intent 
o Communicate with customers regarding product technical support 
 
Leadership
o Oversight of junior team members work
o Mentor and development of junior team members 
o Develop the company’s tooling systems and procedures
Company Support
o Support shop floor staff as required to ensure manufacture in compliance with design intent, and by the most efficient methods
o Fully comply with Company Policies including Health and Safety at all times
 
Requirements:
Essential
o CAD Skills (Modelling and Drawings) on Catia or similar program
o Minimum 5 years of design experience
o Tooling experience
o Practical mindset and approach to engineering 
o Understanding of GD&T
o Aerospace and/or defence experience
 
Optional
o Structural analysis skills (hand calculations or FEA modelling)
o Hands-on composite experience
o CNC programming experience
o Programme management experience
o Manufacturing Engineering experience
o
